Hivos Iconic Island
Most islands in Indonesia lack reliable energy services. Unreliable energy services are one of the reasons for widespread poverty in the archipelago. Hivos wants to show that sustainable energy can be a chance for reliable energy provision and the alleviation of poverty. As a showcase, the organization will support one island in a transition towards sustainable energy. This objective is far from easy. The island needs all the help it can get. Hivos presents a quick overview of this promising showcase and the problems that have to be overcome.
Hivos invites you to think up solutions to facilitate the change: How can Dutch citizens and companies assist in the energy transition on an Indonesian island?
In two hours time mixed teams of participants will choose their angle to approach the problem and develop a proposal to involve Dutch citizens and companies in this unique project.
Hivos ZeroLab – your sustainable company
Find solutions for CO2 reduction in own organisation. In groups you will develop a business case for your company. The elevator pitch of the group work will be recorded on camera. A jury will judge the pitches. Participants are challenged to present their idea to CEO of own organisation. Winning pitch will be invited on Hivos website and YPMTD-site.
Hivos Green Battle
In the 21st century most companies realize that sustainability should be integrated in their long term strategy. Compared to 10 years back, we see a staggering amount of buzz-words such as ‘greening the economy’ and ‘people planet profit’ everywhere around us. Yet somehow, these good intentions hardly ever translate into concrete actions. How can the people’s behaviour change for the better?
Hivos challenges you to make a difference! Join a multidisciplinary team of Young Professionals and compete in the Green Battle. The challenge: design the best innovative sustainable concept in two hours time. Step by step a vague idea is turned into a concrete and practical business proposal.
1% Club & Mijn huis in Ipauratu
Mijn huis in Ipauratu Colombia is committed to improving the living conditions of underprivileged people in the village Paluato in Colombia. The short-term goal is to meet the basic needs. In the longer term, the foundation wants to make sure that the inhabitants can establish their own livelihood. Ipauratu currently raises money for sanitation and a kitchen for the local school through the 1%CLUB. The foundation requests a communication plan in which the following question will be answered: "what can Ipauratu do to fascinate and bind their potential donors (approximately 600 direct contacts) with the aim of converting them to donors?" There is website and Ipauratu makes use of Facebook and Twitter. Many contacts are made face to face.
1% Club & Ghana-Haarlem
The Ghana- Haarlem Foundation collects money for a bee project through the 1% CLUB. The beekeeping project helps 150 women and young people to become a beekeeper in order to generate additional income. The 150 participants have been trained and in May 2010 they will receive a beehive set that they must repay within three years. In addition, there are 21 demonstration hives purchased by the local organization to produce honey and generate own income. The next step is to put the honey on the market. From the Netherlands we are happy to support the organization in order to professionalize the honey production and to make the partner organization self-sustaining. Our question is : how do we bring our bee products from Ghana to the local and international market?
1% Club & SYPO.
SYPO provides structural support to projects in Uganda with a self-reliant, enterprising nature to support or to set up. Through the 1% CLUB they raise money for the Yogurt Project; pregnant Friesian cows are given to women who want to take in an orphan child. Moreover, a yogurt factory was set up to provide the Ugandan local partner organization with an independent income. They also have a microcredit program.
As a little foundation it is rather difficult to generate a stable income which makes it difficult to keep the projects running. There are now 35 constant supporters and some occasional sponsors. We want a broader base and are looking for ideas to recruit more donors and involve companies.

Finding jobs and building careers in international organisations can be a daunting task. Michael Emery, UNDP's Chief of Recruitment, challenges young professionals to approach international careers in a holistic fashion, looking at the value of qualifications, how to (and not to) apply for positions, demystifying what the levels and contract types are employed in the UN system and what they mean, looking at the importance of reputation management and effective networking in a multi-cultural environment, how to incorporate a competency mindset into building a career, the necessity of being cognizant of job satisfiers and aware of one's personal value system when making career choices, the idea of building career momentum, and how to identify career opportunities on the horizon.
Mainstreaming sustainability in supply chains; from thinking big to doing big
Yuca Waarts (Ministry of LNV & LEI Wageningen UR)
How do you integrate sustainable development in the blueprint of a business organization? And how do you effectuate sustainable supply chain strategies in the field, without stepping out of your business’ core competencies and losing competitive advantage? These are questions which yet remain to be answered in order to be able to capture value on all segments of the triple bottom line.
With this project we intend to gather the experience of YPs and critically reflect on these questions. The results will be jointly disseminated throughout the business, policy and research domain on sustainable agricultural supply chain development.
“Sludgebucks” coffee
Elsine van Os (Shell)
The focus of the project is on one coffee farm in Guatemala as a trial project. It has a sustainable/ long term intent, with prototype development in 2010 and implementation early 2011 at the latest. It is a very simple and straight forward way of supporting coffee farmers in their coffee production process by generating energy out of their waste material and managing CO2 emissions and water pollution at the same time.
Privacy, Security and Identity Management in Mobile services for developing regions
Jenny Boer (TNO) + Hajo Beijma( texttochange)
In Africa, access to and use of ICT and mobile services is growing fast. While the growth and potential of these new mobile services is tremendous, little attention has been paid to privacy, security and identity management issues that will naturally arise from these innovations. For example: In Citizen Media activities where mobile phones are the tool of choice for a new group of young reporters in Africa, the reports they create might eventually be held against them, so how to protect the reporters? (Voices of Africa: Citizen Journalists Reporting with Mobile Phones). How to realize the successful implementation of M4D services, by taking into account privacy, identity management and security issues.

As such the Orange Bracelet will become the fair trade alternative for regular World Cup premiums. Myrtille Danse (BoP Innovation Center)
Current efforts to realize MDG Nr. 1, to eradicate extreme hunger and poverty, are insufficient. Extraordinary measures and solutions are required. Partnering for Prosperity is such an extraordinary initiative. Founded by the CEO’s of DSM, TNT and Unilever it invites the private sector, governments and NGO’s, starting in the Netherlands, to join forces to make a true impact. Partnering for Prosperity is based on the conviction that the most sustainable way of providing help to the developing world is to support people in taking take care of their own needs: capacity building and entrepreneurship are key.
