The role of International Business in Developing Countries

The aim of this symposium was to create awareness amongst young professionals on the contribution and impact international business has in improving community opportunities and the quality of life in developing countries.

The symposium covered subjects like cultural differences, ethical issues, entrepreneurship and its contribution to reducing poverty through engaging speakers such as Bert Koenders Minister of Development cooperation), André Veneman (Director of Sustainability AkzoNobel) and Jeroen Blum (Deputy Director Shell Foundation). Chairman of the day was Pierre Hupperts, expert in corporate social responsibility. The participants actively confronted the topics in interactive workshops, provided by Shell, DSM, TNO, Rabobank, Philips, SharePeople and Business in Development. Young professionals were able to exchange views with each other at a plenary debate and during closing drinks.

The symposium was a collaborative effort by the Young Professionals associations of DSM, Shell, Philips, Rabobank, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and TNO together with the organisations SharePeople and Business in Development. The symposium was co-facilitated by the ICA network and with support from the development cooperation organisation ICCO.
